"Pamela King Cable has created an unforgettable heroine in Neeley McPherson, a remarkable young woman of such courage and spunk that she dares to stand against unspeakable abuse and injustice not only for herself but also for her beloved caretaker, Gideon. Fleeing a horrendous life, Neeley discovers the true meaning of family, forgiveness, and love in a wolf sanctuary, which becomes a central metaphor for the difficult journey we all must undertake to find our way home. Thoroughly enjoyable book!" ~ Cassandra King Conroy (Pat's wife) - Bestselling author of Moonrise, The Same Sweet Girls, and The Sunday Wife

This inspirational tale thrills with a tight plot, lyrical scene descriptions, and complex characters. Pamela Cable leaves readers aching for more.” ~ Julie Cantrell, New York Times bestselling author.

"I would compare The Sanctum to Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird. Set in the deep south during the Civil Rights Era, this book tackles such issues as racial discrimination and abuse." ~ Kimberly A. Liston-McCabe

On a November day in 1951 Neeley McPherson turned five ... and accidentally killed her parents. Thrown into the care of her scheming and alcoholic grandfather, she survives by her quick wit, and the watchful eye of an elderly black man, Gideon. In 1959, as equal rights heats up the South, authorities accuse Gideon of stealing a watch and using a Whites Only restroom. Neeley, now thirteen, determines to break him out of jail.

When the infamous Catfish Cole, Ku Klux Klan Grand Dragon of the Carolinas, discovers their courageous escape, he pursues Neeley and Gideon into the frozen Blue Ridge Mountains to a wolf sanctuary. But will Neeley's actions lead to tragedy again? Or will she finally find the love of family she lost as a child?

Set during a volatile time in America, The Sanctum bestows sanctuary and invokes the power of second chances.

The Sanctum edition by Pamela King Cable Literature Fiction eBooks

Pamela King Cable is a new author to me, but I will be following this impressive author in the future. Topics pivotal to this intense novel include physical and verbal abuse, alcoholism, racism, family and love. A young teen, Neeley suffered severe beatings from a grandfather who was a drunk and an abuser. Neeley was left to suffer her pain alone except for the compassion of Gideon, an elderly Black man. Gideon filled the role of caregiver since Neeley's parents died in a car accident. With the Ku Klux Klan alive and anxious to hang a Black man "just because," Gideon's life was in danger.

There are characters in The Sanctum who wrapped themselves around my heart. Others made me ill with disgust. This novel affected me so profoundly that I can't think of reading another book just yet. I'm still absorbing the powerful character development, scenic imagery and haunting themes that awakened my senses to the unchanging characteristics that label us as humans. We haven't changed, and possibly never will.

Composed with perception and artistry, I was swept into this painful yet magnificent portrayal of life in the south during the 1950s. The depth of Ms. Cable's creativity evoked emotions that reached deep within my soul. I highly recommend this compelling and powerful book!

The Sanctum edition by Pamela King Cable Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Sanctum is written as a historical fictional novel set in deep south in the USA in the 1950's. Told through the eyes of Neeley, a young white thirteen year old girl. Having lost her parents at the tender age of five she then finds herself living with her abusive, unloving grandfather. Her only friend and companion being an elderly Negro man who works on the grandfathers property. Neeley and Gideon find they have to flee when the Klu Klux Klan and the town folk accuse Gideon of a crime he didn't commit. Finding refuge in a wolf sanctuary they find a new family and the relationships in time unravel family secrets. The novel is well written, descriptive and engaging although I did find the first part of the novel held my interest more than the second half. For those who loved 'To Kill a Mocking Bird' this book is an equal rival.
The Sanctum takes place in my beloved South, and Pamela King Cable tackles the dark, Gothic side of the South in superb fashion, with fine writing. From heartache, tragedy, and misery to escape, growth and triumph in a stupendous rise to a great ending, this story is a good one . . . the one you want to share . . . the one you keep on your shelf to revisit later in hope to experience the thrill again. Tough subjects performed well and worthy of the reading journey. Highly recommended.
I seldom write reviews but this one I had to take the time to review. Pamela King Cable did an outstanding job of combining storytelling with the reality of our history and the actions of people living in this period while adding in the true struggle and will to live and thrive as a "common" person in the time. You laugh, you cry, you sigh, but most of all you feel the triumph of the characters as the story plays out. The presence of God is abundant even as you question how could this happen to this little girl. At the end of the book you are feeling redeemed and thankful and blessed and satisfied. I highly recommend it. (Oh, and there are surprises that bring a smile to your face, for sure!)

Also, side note, I found no errors in spelling or grammar which is a HUGE plus to me after some of the ebooks I've endured reading just because I didn't want to waste my money or the time I had put in already reading. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Pamela King Cable for caring about the integrity of your product!!
“The Sanctum is a must read for people who love Southern novels. The female version of Athol Dickson, Cable uses some strong language for character development purposes, but her writing will truly take you to the South and allow you to experience the gritty truth that it wasn’t all beautiful plantations and flowers. She’s an expert at character development, and she’ll rip your heart out while she makes you cling to hope.”
B. J. Robinson, Author of Siege of Azalea Plantation and Calm Before the Storm
